Day 261 – The Puzzle – Just Another Day In Separation Season

As I start this blog, it’s 5:57 am on Wednesday, January 1st, 2025.

The picture above was taken 5 minutes before on I-75 as I headed to grab a coffee and start my year thinking about 2024 and what I plan on making happen in 2025.

The drive from Union to Park Hills is 10 minutes of expressway time.  As I drove, I was shocked.

WHERE IS EVERYONE?

It was strange; it reminded me of a few days early in the COVID shutdowns when I’d be the only person on I75 heading to our office downtown.

It’s not like it’s 3 am, and the roads should be empty; it’s a FUCKING Wednesday.

Ohhhhh, it’s January 1st, a day to use as an excuse for yet another day off. Are the people who deserve the day off? Hell yeah.  Today, I think about the retail and restaurant workers who have been grinding through the holidays; hell yeah, take a week off. You 100% deserve it.

But this road, I-75, leads to downtown Cincinnati, the home to thousands of businesses.  Buildings that should be full of driven individuals.  People who “want it.”  People who proclaim, “This is my year,”  and write out their goals before anyone else.

SEPARATION SEASON IS REAL

A friend mentioned GENIUS, “separation season, ” a few years ago.”  The thought was easy: there are times every year when people take time off, take their foot off the gas, and use every excuse they can think of to take a break.  When she mentioned it, she discussed the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  But the more I think about it, the more I realize there are many days and times of the year that makeup separation season; today is one of them.

It’s days like today and nights like last night. It’s 6 a.m.- that’s not early- and the roads to a top-30 downtown metro are EMTPY!

I love it!   It proves too many of my peers, my competition, are waking up late, sipping coffee at home, and waiting for tomorrow.

Keep adding those days to the calendar. The more SS days you add, the farther behind you’ll get.
