Day 269 – The Puzzle – How to Build a Following Bigger Than Your Restaurant and Make Yourself the Brand!

Becoming the Billboard: How You Can Be the Brand for Your Restaurant

When you think of restaurant marketing, you probably envision TV ads, radio spots, Facebook posts, or even your restaurant’s sign. But what if I told you that the most important part of the equation is often overlooked? It’s you. Yes, you are the missing piece. Today, we’re going to explore how you can become the brand that supports all your restaurant’s marketing efforts.

Hi, I’m Matt Plapp, the Chief Energy Officer of Restaurant Marketing That Works. I’ve been helping restaurants like yours get massive attention, create excitement, and, most importantly, drive sales. Why You Need to Be the Brand

Back in the day, your restaurant’s sign was enough to grab attention. But in today’s world, people are glued to their phones. To cut through the noise, you need to be the show. Becoming the face of your restaurant builds a personal connection and makes your marketing memorable.

Take my friend Avery from Little Italy Restaurante as an example. Avery wanted to stand out and chose something simple yet powerful—a pizza shirt. Every day, Avery wears his signature pizza shirt, making him instantly recognizable in his community. This consistency has turned him into a walking billboard for his restaurant. On top of that, he’s constantly creating video content, further establishing his brand presence.

Step 1: Own Your Story

What makes your restaurant special? Share your journey, your passion, and your personality. Whether it’s a signature look, a catchy slogan, or a unique theme, find something that resonates with you and your customers. For me, it’s the color orange and the MP logo—you see it everywhere I go. For Avery, it’s the pizza shirt. What will it be for you?

Step 2: Turn Your Vehicle into a Rolling Billboard

Every day, you drive from your restaurant to your home, the gym, and various errands. That’s a marketing opportunity! If you don’t have a wrapped vehicle, you’re missing out. Imagine a pizza place with a wrapped Corvette cruising around town—it would stop people in their tracks and create an Instagram-worthy moment. A well-designed vehicle wrap grabs attention and ensures your brand is seen everywhere you go. But remember, if you’re going to wrap your vehicle, drive responsibly—nobody wants a bad driver representing their brand!

Step 3: Leverage Your Team and Customers

Your employees and customers are untapped marketing resources. Years ago, I saw a restaurant owner making employees buy their uniforms. Big mistake! Your team should be wearing your shirts proudly, both at work and out in the community. When someone sees your logo at the grocery store, they’re reminded of your restaurant. The same goes for your customers—offer them branded merch. Imagine hundreds, even thousands, of people walking around wearing your logo. That’s free advertising with long-term impact.

Step 4: Consistency is Key

Whatever you choose to represent your brand, stick with it. I chose orange because it’s bold, energetic, and unique. Avery chose a pizza shirt because it’s playful and ties directly to his business. Find what works for you and make it your own. Be consistent, both inside your restaurant and out in the community.

Final Thoughts

Becoming the brand isn’t just about looking the part—it’s about living it. When you fully embrace your role as your restaurant’s biggest advocate, your marketing efforts will feel more authentic and impactful. From branded vehicles to employee shirts, every touchpoint matters.
