I’m at the gym this morning and see a lady I often see, but her counterpart (lifting partner) is missing AGAIN. I’d noticed she wasn’t with her last week either and asked…
“Where’s your counterpart?”
Her response, “She’s taking a break over the holidays.”
Let me be frank, when you want to WIN, there’s no such thing as a “BREAK”.
And this is even more important if you’re losing, you know, like being BROKE or in the gym example, drastically out of shape.
Since 2008, I’ve coached entrepreneurs, primarily restaurant and marketing agency owners. And every time I hear them cry to blues or talk about failure, it’s almost always a given that they’ve stopped and started recently.
Warren Buffett once said about how he built extreme wealth, “I did the same exact thing for 40 straight years.”
Success comes from sustained effort over an extended period of time.
Failure comes from starting and stopping, or “taking a break.”
Here are two examples to drive it home.
Example #1 – A restaurant owner spoke with my team months ago and got the same advice we give every owner. Much of that advice is action around our 3 commandments of ABR: Attract attention, Build relationships, and Retain your customers.
This particular owner got off the call and took action for a month. Facebook videos, great social content, email, and text promos…
AND THEN HE STOPPED.
30 days later, he was back on a call with my team, complaining about his sales performance. Will doing something for a month make any difference? It’s no different than eating right and working out; it takes time.
It takes YEARS!
Example #2 – This was a marketing agency owner. She’s seeking help with her sales scripts for a nonexistent sales team she plans to hire. I ask a few simple questions to understand where she is and where she’s been. Her answers baffled me. How could someone own a marketing agency and not know these answers?!
Then I did something simple: I clicked through to her personal Facebook account and scrolled back through her posts. Every 6 months, she had something new. A new business, a new idea, a new product, and it became glaringly obvious.
My friends, if you want to find success in business or life, you have to do the same shit over and over and over and over again.
If you need to lose weight, eat right, and work out every day for 3 years.
If you want more sales for your restaurant, market every day for 3 years.
If you want more money, spend less and make more every day for 3 years.
And never stop to “take breaks.”
This week’s book suggestion is a repeat, but worth it. If you want to see what it takes to win, read Phil Knight’s Shoe Dog. We all know what Nike is today, but wait until you read about the first 10 years of its existence.
